![]() Just before the prime minister’s interview, Greens housing spokesman Max Chandler-Mather expressed doubts about the government’s willingness to trigger an early election: “I think if were going to go to the public and they said we would rather go back to an early election than spend a few extra billion dollars on public and affordable housing … I think the public would look on that very poorly. Labor will bring its $10 billion housing bill back to parliament next week, challenging the Greens and Coalition to block the unchanged legislation a second time. “What we want, though, is for our housing Australia future legislation to pass – we have a mandate for it I put it in my second budget.” “There certainly won’t be an election this year,” he said when asked about the possibility on ABC Brisbane radio this morning. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed there will be no election this year. “I say to the Senate, they have an opportunity when they sit next week to bring on the debate over the Housing Australia Future Fund that sits in the Senate, sits there idle, they refuse to debate it or refuse to have a vote on this to bring it on.” “What states and territories are doing is looking at their jurisdictions and we’ll have a discussion about renters’ rights,” Albanese said, adding no two states were the same. ![]() The Greens say their support is conditional upon the government co-ordinating a national rent freeze, however, Albanese said the government wasn’t “abolishing the states”. “A secure roof over your head is a precondition for a good quality of life, and that’s why my government is determined to do everything that we can to advance our housing agenda,” Albanese said, adding it was “absurd” the Greens were blocking the legislation while saying they cared about social and affordable housing. Anthony Albanese is keeping the pressure on the Greens over its opposition to the $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund. ![]()
